HISTORY
The Hickory Community Theatre is the third oldest community theatre in North Carolina, having been first visualized in 1947. During the next sixteen months, progress was made irregularly until February 19, 1949, when a meeting was held to formally organize a theatrical group. The meeting was led by Katherine "Kay" Johnson, then assistant director of recreation for the City of Hickory, who served as the driving force behind the organization of the Theatre. The institution was named The Hickory Little Theatre the next month, and the first live performance was set for May 24, 1949, in the Hickory City Auditorium. The Theatre has always been located in the old City Hall, and the staff members and volunteers reverently refer to the "jail" (now the scenic shop) and the "firemen's kitchen", both of which are still nicknamed after their original functions. A massive renovation effort during the three year-period from 1984-1987 updated the theatre's auditorium, stage, lobby, dressing rooms and technical facilities.  HCT is now celebrating 55 years!

Our Mission: Western Piedmont Symphony's mission is to provide musical performances of distinction that enrich and enliven the community's classical music experience, and to nourish new audiences through school concerts and family outreach programs.
HISTORY:  Paul Whitener, a football player at Duke University in 1935 met Mildred McKinney (Mickey Coe) who was from Little Switzerland, NC, in 1935.  Whitener's artistic talent advanced so rapidly that aspiring young artist, Mickey, soon traded in her own paintbox to encourage her new fledgling husband's career.  He studied at the Ringling Museum of Art and also studied with Wilford S.Conrow, Frank Stanley Herring and Donald Blake along with pursuing studies at the Grand Central Art Gallery's school in New York City.  Whitener's own personal journal from September of 1943 reports a group of consciencious citizens gathering to discuss organizing an art association in Hickory, with an ultimate aim of establishing a Museum of Art.  The first executive committee met in December of 1943 and within 8 weeks a full board was elected.  It was at this first meeting that the unanaimous decision was made that once a museum was established, Paul Whitener would be its director. After Whitener's death, his wife became executive director from 1960-1980.  The current executive director is Lise Swensen.
