Hickory Ranked Among Safest Cities in North Carolina

The City of Hickory is ranked the No. 20 safest city in North Carolina, according to SafeHome, a professional review site dedicated to making communities safer. With a safety score of 64.06, Hickory is noted to have exceptionally low violent crime and property crime rates, as well as the best citizen-to-officer ratio among North Carolina's top 25 safest cities.

"For over 20 years, the Hickory Police Department has worked in partnership with our citizens under the philosophy of community policing. It is this philosophy and partnership that has made Hickory one of the safest and best places to live in North Carolina," said Hickory Police Chief Thurman Whisnant. "It's important that we all continue our efforts to be involved and vigilant as our City continues to grow."

The safety scores are based on a variety of factors, including the following:

  1. the FBI crime report on number and types of crimes committed over a single year
  2. the City's crime trends
  3. number of law enforcement officers compared to the population
  4. demographic metrics such as population density, population trends, unemployment rate, median income, education level, etc.

SafeHome performs studies all over the country to help identify at-risk communities. For more information on this study's methodology and to learn more about Hickory's safety score, please visit: www.safehome.org/safest-cities/nc/.
